It is not only the central location within Germany that benefits Hesse as a logistics location. Frankfurt Airport also has a major influence and is considered a globally important hub for passenger and goods transport. In addition, the most important inland waterways, the Main and Rhine, have a significant impact on Hesse's logistics sector. Access to Dutch ports brings additional advantages. The nationally excellent road and rail transport network also contributes positively to the logistical attractiveness of the parliamentary republic.
The state government is a leader in efficient freight transport: the state is a role model in the field of optimal transport mode networking as well as in the use of innovative technologies for a sustainable transport system. The goal is to optimally utilise infrastructure capacities. This has contributed to the fact that some 1,300 haulage companies are now at home in Hesse. A large number of the companies are organised in the Fachverband Güterkraftverkehr und Logistik Hessen e.V. (Hessen Road Haulage and Logistics Association). A total of around 225,000 people are employed in the logistics sector in Hesse.
Logistics investors see North Hesse far ahead. First and foremost, the best "cut-off time" excites even the most critical expansion managers. Thanks to the ideal location and infrastructure, industry leaders such as DHL Freight GmbH and Hermes Logistik Gruppe have settled here. As a central location, corporations such as Dänisches Bettenlager or Edeka also supply their branches from North Hesse. With the "flagship distribution park of Germany" in Kassel, IDI Gazeley built the largest Magna Park on the European mainland to date. The Fulda, Kassel and Lohfelden freight villages were among the top 10 in an evaluation of over 150 logistics locations. Another hobbyhorse of North Hesse, which was awarded "Top Deal in Project Development" in 2014, is Continental's 47,000 square metre logistics hall built in Korbach.
While North Hesse is characterised by state transport hubs, the Rhine/Main conurbation is convincing as one of the three most important logistics regions in the Federal Republic of Germany and is considered an international gateway to the global flow of goods. The business location Frankfurt/Rhine/Main is excellently connected to all modes of transport and has developed into one of the leading locations for logistics and transport services in Europe. It is planned to develop a profile as a logistics location with global significance. Growing markets such as Asia and Eastern Europe are easily accessible thanks to the exceptional connection of international road, rail, air and inland waterway transport. The further development of the logistics cluster Frankfurt/Rhine/Main is supported, among others, by the Initiative Logistik RheinMain, which is located at the research and education centre "House of Logistics and Mobility". In the logistics and transport sectors, the region has plenty of know-how thanks to a diversity of companies and research institutions. The European capital and information infrastructure is literally at the feet of logistics specialists.
Southern Hesse is one of the German regions with the highest economic power and the densest population. Compared to northern Hesse, which specialises in German and European markets, the distribution centres in southern Hesse serve regional and global markets. For example, the rapid distribution of spare parts via the logistics centres near Frankfurt Airport plays a major role. From here, goods can be shipped all over the world in the shortest possible time, allowing customers to benefit from minimal delivery times. In addition, southern Hesse is interesting because of the numerous consulting companies with logistics connections.
The Rhine-Main region in particular suffers from a shortage of space. In Frankfurt, the capacities for logistics locations are almost exhausted. Instead, the part of the Rhine-Main region in Rhineland-Palatinate promises potential. According to Logivest, new construction activity in 2015 amounted to 253,300 square metres.
Contract logistics as a sub-sector of logistics services is enjoying growth rates. Contract logistics is also indispensable in Hesse. The range of logistics space extends from Stockstadt to Malsfeld to Rodgau. Production halls, pallet storage areas, oversized logistics parks or transshipment halls can also be found. The best logistics locations can be found along the A3.
