The logistics sector represents an elementary key industry in Rhineland-Palatinate. Its central location within Europe and Germany contributes to a high export rate of over 54 percent, making Rhineland-Palatinate one of the top performers in the Federal Republic. Many international corporations have chosen the state because its location makes it an ideal base. The networking of all modes of transport through twelve inland ports and five freight villages (GVZ) has a positive effect on the logistics location and is a guarantee for logistical efficiency. The GVZs at a glance:
Around 120,000 people are employed in the local logistics sector. In the southwest, the economic region shows maximum dynamism. The logistics service spectrum is diverse and offers the right solution for almost every need. The focus is on automotive, trade and industrial logistics. As Rhineland-Palatinate is known as Germany's most important wine exporter, special attention must be paid to beverage logistics.
The federal state is characterised by four logistics regions, some of which cross state and national borders. Trier, Rheinhessen, Pfalz and Koblenz mark the chamber districts of the core regions. Logistics companies in Rhineland-Palatinate also benefit from the excellent connections to other important economic regions such as the Rhine-Main area, the Rhine-Neckar region, Luxembourg and the Grand Duchy.
Rhineland-Palatinate has the densest network of interregional and large-scale roads in Germany. As of 2015, logistics companies have access to 877 kilometres of motorway, over 2,870 kilometres of federal road, around 7,200 kilometres of state road and 7,400 kilometres of district road for the transport of goods. The expansion of the A 61 between Hunsrück and Rheinböllen to six lanes and the complete expansion of the A 1 between Blankenheim and Kelberg will optimise access to transhipment facilities, customers and distribution centres.
At the same time, the rail network of European importance and the most important waterways, the Moselle and Rhine, guarantee connections to European economic centres. The container ports with the highest throughput in Germany are the Rhine ports in Rhineland-Palatinate. The more than 600 kilometres of waterways include the following:
The state is also very well positioned in terms of rail transport. Several important European transversal routes run through Rhineland-Palatinate and allow for inexpensive and environmentally friendly transport services. In addition to DB Cargo AG and BASF AG, more than a dozen rail transport companies have their headquarters here. Since 2000, BASF's transhipment facility has been the largest CT (combined transport) road/rail terminal in Rhineland-Palatinate. The facility can also be used by external loading companies and freight forwarders. The demand is enormous. The handling capacity was already around 550,000 loading units per year in 2012.
The air transport mode rounds off the infrastructural conditions perfectly. With Zweibrücken and Frankfurt-Hahn airports, the state's air transport is well positioned. Connections to the airports in Frankfurt, Luxembourg and Cologne-Bonn are further important traffic arteries. To reach conurbations, there are also 33 special airfields and 14 commercial airfields. Ramstein and Spangdahlem airfields are of great importance for military aviation. Aviation services and the aviation industry are still on the rise. Many specialised companies have settled here. The need for logistics services is therefore given.
Rhineland-Palatinate is predestined for the establishment of distribution centres with its demand-oriented offers and storage areas. Attractive commercial sites with expansion potential, spacious halls, industrial parks and individual solutions for contract logistics are presented for rent and purchase.
