Thuringia is one of the top locations in the logistics sector. The state's locational advantages are promising, including its central location in Europe and Germany. There are already more than 280 million consumers within a radius of 800 kilometres, which is reflected in turnover opportunities that should not be underestimated. All important European markets and economic centres can be reached within a very short time and the first-class infrastructure makes transports much easier. Many leading logistics companies such as DB Schenker, redcoon, Dachser, BLG Logistics and DHL have therefore settled here. According to calculations from the LEG company and technology database, Thuringia's logistics sector has over 500 logistics companies and more than 30,000 employees (as of 2015). It is an indispensable employer, creating tens of thousands of jobs and producing well-trained specialists. Important partner companies for the international parcel service such as UPS, Hermes or TNT are also represented. Thanks to the positive conditions, logistics companies can achieve excellent cut-off times and successfully implement "just-in-time" deliveries.
Thuringia has a high-performance infrastructure. The connections to the A 4, A 9, A 38, A 71 and A 73 motorways guarantee direct access to the state-wide road network and thus the opportunity for efficient freight transport. The conditions on the railways are no less attractive: the rail network in Thuringia is the densest in Europe measured in relation to the state's population. Around 1,550 kilometres of track are available. In particular, the route from Paris via Frankfurt on the Main, Berlin and Warsaw to Moscow is one of the essential connecting lines for freight transport that pass through Thuringia. But the main railway station in Erfurt will also play an important role for logistics companies in the future. It will become a hub for ICE traffic from 2017. By connecting the metropolitan regions with all parts of the state, Thuringia as a whole will benefit from the optimised express lines.
In the area of air freight shipping, Erfurt-Weimar Airport is elementary on an international level. The connection to the most important global airports is ensured by DB Schenker, for example. The internal air-and-road hub of TNT Express, on the other hand, is used for the onward transport of consignments by truck or plane, and its own customs clearance also brings advantages for logistics companies. Within three hours, express air freight flights can be realised to anywhere in Europe. The prompt delivery of goods by air is guaranteed.
Overall, Thuringia's standing conditions can be reduced to three decisive factors: Specialised skilled workers, an ideal infrastructure and optimally connected storage and commercial areas bring decisive competitive advantages. Especially in view of the fact that combined transport by rail and road is gaining in importance due to rising spray prices, Thuringia's logistics companies seem to be well prepared.
Thuringia has become a popular logistics location due to the best growth opportunities and location conditions. Companies such as Zalando, Schenker Deutschland and KNV Logistik would not have settled here otherwise. There is a wide range of commercial space on offer. The Thuringia freight transport centre covers an area of around 340 hectares and is one of the largest freight transport centres in Germany. The A 71 and A 4 motorways are directly connected and the rail terminal promotes rapid goods handling. The Erfurt logistics centre is equally worthy of mention. Around 70 hectares are available here. The Panasonic company alone uses 40,000 square metres here for logistics handling. Both the Thuringia freight traffic centre and the airport can be reached quickly. To name just a few examples.
Regardless of whether warehouse space, contract logistics space or logistics real estate of other kinds is needed, Thuringia has the perfect offer for almost every need. And because the state also has the potential to become a hub to Eastern Europe, such investments are promising.
