Saarland as a logistics location
Bordering Rhineland-Palatinate, Luxembourg and the Alsace-Champagne-Ardenne-Lorraine region of France, Saarland has high logistical potential despite its small area. Thanks to its attractive location in the southwest of Germany, the state is part of the Saar-Lor-Lux European region and thus secures access to around 4.7 million consumers. The local logistics sector is regarded as the engine of innovation and economic driver of the Federal Republic. It is of international importance and benefits from the excellent location conditions. In addition to a large number of medium-sized companies, Saarland is home to various global players. The range of services is first-class and characterised by international know-how. From distribution and warehousing to order picking and transshipment to production and transport, Saarland is home to hundreds of businesses for almost every need. The strong network does an outstanding job and promotes the European movement of goods with the regional logistics networks. Contract logistics companies are attracted to the region by the high industrial density. Since the investments in education, development and research are also right, companies find highly qualified skilled workers locally.
Infrastructure in Saarland
In addition to its proximity to France, it is the high level of logistics competence that gives Saarland an important position as a logistics hub. The transport links with dense motorway, air, waterway and rail networks provide direct access to elementary markets in Western Europe. Every year, exports worth more than 9 billion euros and imports worth around 8.5 billion euros are handled via the various transport routes. 24-hour delivery can be guaranteed via impressive logistics networks and truck hubs.
The road network is one of the densest in Germany. Belgium, Luxembourg and France are quickly reached and a good secondary road network perfects the infrastructure. For freight transport, the excellent motorway network plays a central role. In addition to the A 8, A 1, A 620 and A 623, the federal roads B 41 and B 269 play a decisive role in transport.
In terms of rail transport, the connection to the Frankfurt-Saarbrücken-Paris high-speed rail network is advantageous. Paris can be reached in less than two hours by TGV or ICE. The Saar River, which runs about 90 kilometres through the Saarland, is an essential waterway. Thanks to its continuous canalisation, it is also available to large ships and allows them to overcome a height difference of 55 metres via barrages. The three port facilities of Völklingen, Merzig and Saarlouis-Dillingen ensure the economic use of the Saar. Connections to Rotterdam and Antwerp create links to the Rhine and Moselle.
Saarbrücken International Airport serves as the most important artery for air traffic and is complemented by two glider airfields, various special landing areas and a commercial airfield. Due to its modernity, the airport in Saarbrücken is indispensable for commercial air traffic. Five other international airports are located within a radius of 200 kilometres.
